Alton Elementary LRC has been busy hosting some exciting events to entice students to read and learn.
Vocabulary Parade
Alton Elementary LRC hosted a vocabulary parade where students and staff participated in a parade to promote learning and develop vocabulary. Students displayed their newly- learned vocabulary words on their costume and were able to share their knowledge during the parade.

Reading Is Fundamental
The first RIF distribution took place in October and it was a great success. Students had a lesson about the meaning of RIF and created collages to demonstrate their understanding. Their work is displayed outside the LRC.

Pumpkin Patch Pictures
After students brought in decorated pumpkins for the book character contest, the pumpkins were used to create a pumpkin patch outside the library. Students paid $3.50 for a photo in the pumpkin patch. The money will be used to purchase lounge chairs for the leisure reading area. Please visit our Home page to see a slideshow of our decorated book character pumpkins.

Scholastic Book Fair
Alton Elementary LRC hosted a book fair from October 28th - November 4th. We had a great turn out thanks to the help of our parents and our volunteers. I promoted the book fair by sending flyers home with students, displaying an invitation on the marquee outside the school, posting signs around the school, and promoted a competition between the principal and assistant principal for book sales.
Book Fair Night
The library hosted a book fair night to allow working parents to visit the book fair after work. The LRC stayed open from 3:30, when students are dismissed, until 7:00 pm to give parents a chance to purchase books for their children. I requested a costume of Geronimo Stilton from Scholastic to help with promoting book fair night. The gracious music teacher, Mrs. Stidwell, agreed to wear the costume to every single classroom to distribute flyers for book fair night. I accompanied 'Mr. Stilton' to speak for him and the students had a blast meeting him. I provided parents with hot chocolate on their way out to thank them for supporting our library.
Book Fair Hair Color Competition
In order to attract more students (and teachers to the book fair), I asked for the help of the administrators. They agreed to compete for votes on who would wear silly hair for a whole school day. Every time the students purchased an item from the book fair they would receive tickets to vote for either the principal, the assistant principal or the reading coach to wear silly hair on the last day of the book fair. The principal and the assistant principal ended up with a 'tie' (gasp...). On Friday, November 4th, they were transformed by me, the librarian/hair dresser.
